Being an artist is just what I was born into; I was always one to choose art supplies over toys and Martha Stewart magazine over Teen Bop.
My design journey, however, started at Seattle Pacific University where I earned a degree in interior design and spent time studying business and art as well. While there I had the opportunity to gain intern and work experience in a wide variety of interior design positions which gave me a sense of the true depth and breadth of my field. My internships ran the gamut from retail store design and healthcare design to residential custom furnishings.
Once college was over I found myself in the world of residential remodeling and within three years had earned a position as Design Department Head at a high-end remodeling firm. As a natural-born organizer I quickly saw the HUGE need for order in this field. I spent time after hours developing a very successful system of specification. Over time it became apparent to me that my organizational skills could be useful to remodelers all over the Puget Sound, and my own design firm was born.
During the last four years running “Aubrey Design” I have helped hundreds of homeowners all over the northwest remodel their kitchens and bathrooms. Largely because of the specification system that I developed early in my career I quickly became one of the most well-known and respected designers in the Seattle building community.
During 2011 I took a huge risk and became the first independent interior designer to exhibit a major presence at
the country’s largest home show, The Seattle Home Show. That year I built a trade show display from scratch, exhibited in three trade shows and The Master Builders Tour of Remodeled Homes, judged The Master Builders’ Remodeling Excellence Awards, managed three employees, … oh yeah… and REMODELED 40 HOUSES IN ONE YEAR.
I have now slowed the pace down a little and I am accepting a smaller number of select projects each year. If you would like my design help with a remodel or new construction project you can email me at aubrey@swankurbia.com. My design fees tend to come in at about 10% of the overall project budget. I am currently looking for projects with a contemporary or mid-century modern style, and a relaxed time frame. Let’s chat and see if we might make a good team.
